If your Windows XP computer programs are not launching as expected; with many icons opening an “Open With” window asking you to browse through your computer to find the program to run your software; or, it says ‘rundll32.exe is not found’, it can be pretty frustrating, especially if everything had be ‘working fine’ just prior to this error message.
Well, the solution is often a corrupt registry. Prior to attempting to complete the steps below, be sure to scan your PC for Viruses and/or Malware. If you cannot even do that first, then run the fix below and immediately scan afterwards to cover all bases.
The following will correct the error in your registry:
1- Click Start > Run… this will open a run command window
2- Type notepad and hit enter to launch notepad… if it will still not open, reboot in safe mode (reboot > F8 > Safe Mode) and try it again.
3- Copy or type all the text blow into notepad:
Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00
[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\exefile\shell\open\command]
@=”\”%1\” %*”
4- Save this file using File > Save As… save it to your desktop
a. use this as the File Name – fix.reg
b. use this as the Save As Type – All Files
5- Double-click this new fix.reg file on your desktop
a. Click YES to confirm the registry change
6- Reboot your PC .
7- Try to launch a program… if this was the error, you should be fine and working again.
8- Scan for viruses and malware as a final complete cleaning step
You should be good-2-go now.
Cheers!
